The Demand for Proton Therapy
Why New York
The Demand for Proton Therapy for Proton Therapy Facility in New York
Proton Therapy is a superior and a far more advanced form of radiation treatment that is available today for cancer patients.  It is FDA approved and reimbursed by Medicare/Medicaid and over 180 commercial insurers.  However, proton therapy is largely unknown to most cancer patients and only available in nine locations throughout the United States. These centers are shown in the table below.

As noted, there are no proton therapy centers in the New York metropolitan area. The closest facility is the Roberts Proton Therapy Center at the University of Pennsylvania located 2 hours away from New York City. Approximately 100 proton centers would be needed nationwide to fill the United States demand for these services, yet only nine exist today.

Proton radiation treatment differs from standard radiation therapy. If given in sufficient doses, conventional radiation therapy techniques will control many cancers. However, because of the physician's inability to adequately conform the irradiation pattern to the cancer, healthy tissues may be damaged with radiation.
